Cities are, today, the economy engines, spaces of innovation, competitiveness, cooperation and citizenship, but are simultaneously places of concentration of problems and constraints, such as depopulation, physical degradation, insecurity, etc. It is against this reality that we should reflect and find new ways to intervene, more flexible, more innovative and more inclusive.
Urban regeneration emerges as the most visible face of a new era of urban policies and is a reference in the construction of new models of governance and planning, based on integrated approaches, networks of actors and learning processes. These new urban policies raise questions and dilemmas about its effectiveness, opening the debate about the need and the importance of monitoring and evaluating.
The concept of cities regeneration presupposes respect for the architectural character of the buildings, and should not, however, be confused with the concept of restoration, which involves the reconstruction of the original design of buildings at least the facades and covers. The concept includes many other phenomena and “re” processes arising as a trend in the urban space: redevelopment, revitalization, restructuring, restoration, renovation, rehabilitation, requalification.
It is in this context, framed in PORTUGAL 2020, that mpt® has made a huge curriculum taking advantage of the tremendous opportunities to develop the urban quality of cities.
